Gallery for Round 4 - Islands

It is now some twelve years since I last set foot on the island of São Miguel and in that time the golf offering has changed quite substantially.

Members Luis Garcez, Mauel Sanches, Luis Lopes da Silva and I played the 425 metres long 17th hole at the Furnas Golf Course. The hole heads away from the clubhouse, across a rolling fairway and towards a beautiful backdrop of green mountains. The course is full of lush vegetation and I am sure that in the spring is full of colour from flowers and bushes, some of which have been here for centuries. The black volcanic sand is a curiosity for those more used to the white sand so often found on the majority of courses, but it is a timely reminder that the course is not typical, it has small undulating greens, rolling fairways and is a good test of golf.

When I last visited this volcanic region, Furnas had just nine holes and was in the process of being extended. Set in a beautiful landscape on the aptly named ‘green island’, the original MacKenzie Ross course together with the new holes, offers players the opportunity to enjoy even more of the scenery which looks down towards the Furnas valley.

Ilha Verde is Portuguse for the "green island" and  São Miguel certainly lives up to it's name. The lush green vegetation and wide variety of flowers even at this time of the year will be our backdrop as we ride the forty of so kilometres from Furnas Golf Course to Batalha Golf Club. Our ride across the rolling hills will offer us great views of the sea on both the North and South coastlines.

The Batalha Golf course sits closer to the north coast of São Miguel and enjoys views over the surroundings hills and ocean. Architects Cameron & Powell have played a significant role in the provision of golf on São Miguel with the design of Batalha and extension of Furnas. The 27 holes offering at Batalha is ideally located just on the outskirts of the Capital Ponta Delgado.

Sales & Marketing manager Pilar Melo Antunes, Vice President of the club Americo Nunes, his son Tiago and I played the 4th hole on the C loop. This loop is used in the Ladies European Access Tour event which is played in the autumn. This will be the third time in four years that the event has been played at Batalha and offers visitors the confidence that the venue and it's location is good enough to hold big events.

Throughout the three loops of nine holes, we can notice that the greens which are large and so relatively easy to find from the fairway, have severe undulations, so ensuring a good test to anyone who is a little shaky with the putter.
