The final Golf course of our north round was Montebelo, which is located some 15 or so kilometres from the city of Viseu in the heart of a rural landscape and enjoys spectacular views over the Serra da Estrela and Serra do Caramulo mountain ranges. It was good to finally see these mountains from a distance having spent the best part of a full day cycling through mountainous terrain.
The course designed by Mark Stilwell and Malcolm Kenyon has three loops of nine holes each with their own 'personality'. Golf professional Rui Bazilio and I played the par 5, 2nd hole, a downhill sweep to the the left against a magnificent backdrop of the mountains. A chip & putt par closed out our north round.
Golf Director Bruno Melo had already welcomed us to the course and arranged for us to stay in the five star Montebelo Hotel & Spa. The hotel and course are owned by the multi national Visabeira group and the staff were very accommodating making our overnight stay very enjoyable.
Only 50 kilometres to go, but legs that were grumbling are now screaming. We know that this will be the hardest climb, but with the finish line in sight we are excited at completing Round 2 - perhaps our biggest challenge?
The Montebelo Hotel & Spa was our final stop on the North round. The hotel and course are owned by the multi national Visabeira group. The hotel is located close to the historic centre of Viseu and located on one of the highest points in the city it offers beautiful views over the surrounding countryside. The staff were very accommodating and nothing was too much trouble, from storing our bicycles, to arranging a massage, dinner and a strong Wi-Fi connection.
Following a much needed massage in the well appointed spa, we had dinner in the hotel’s dining room and enjoyed a typically Portuguese menu of calde verde soup, bacalhau and pudim, whilst enjoying the views over the valley.
