Welcome to the fund raising site for the European Disabled Golf Association

Day 6 Monday April 21st

Miramar

One of the north of Portugal's oldest courses and yet perhaps the best kept secret. Admittedly we could not have seen the course on a better day with clear views over the sea and beach, but in any case the course is a nine holes gem. A mix of short but tricky par 4 holes, together with par 3 holes that test the execution of your shots and a long par 5 hole alongside the western boundary of the course, offer the player an interesting challenge.

Professional Sergio Ribeiro offered us a very warm welcome and together we played the par 3, 5th hole. Still a young man, Sergio has been at he club for as long as I can remember, perhaps 18 years or more and during that time he and his team have developed many good young players.

The club very kindly offered a book to us, which celebrates their 75th anniversary. I am sure this will be an interesting read.

Oporto Golf Club

The oldest Golf club in Portugal founded in 1890, the Oporto Golf Club, commonly known as Espinho is located 15 or so kilometres south of the city of Porto. The links has enjoyed design interventions by such renowned architects as Mackenzie Ross and Frank Pennink.

With eight holes on the clubhouse side of a road, which splits the course, a railway track to the east of the land and the sea off to the west, there is a real links feel to the course, which is predominantly flat and exposed to the wind. Depending on the current weather conditions the course can play fast and hard running, allowing for ground approach shots.

It is no surprise to me that Oporto has produced many fine players, in part due to the golf school headed by professional Eduardo Maganinho. I payed the par 4, 10th hole, which heads north. The fairway is protected by a bunker on the right and near to the green a pond on the left. On the day it was a drive and a short iron, but against the north wind, it can play anything up to a drive and a mid or long iron.

Today we need to break the back of the ride to Viseu, which spans the next two days. We know that the first 40 kilometres will be quite simple, but the next 50 will test already tired legs.
