The National Golf Centre - Jamor

The starting point for Golf & Ride Portugal 2014 was The National Golf Centre Jamor. The centre was opened in 2013 and is now home to a nine holes Golf course, driving range, short game area and putting green.

This area is all about sport with the national stadium being home to a football stadium, tennis courts, rugby fields, swimming pool and other opportunities to run, cycle and so on.

A reporting team from Sic Noticias television channel, had been with us all morning as we made our way from Jamor to Oeiras Golf & Residence.

Oeiras Golf & Residence

The newly constructed course was opened in 2013, nine holes are in operation. Portuguese artist Mr Dheo has styled the clubhouse to provide a refreshing reminder that the image of Golf can be fun.

The Director of Orizonte Pedro Mello Bryner, met us as we arrived and took us to the 6th hole which is a par 4 with bunkers on either side waiting for an errant tee shot.

A longtime friend Ginja Figuereirdo accompanied us, and all at Oerias Golf & Residence gave us a very warm welcome.

Quinta da Marinha

The journey to Quinta da Marinha took us through,Estoril which is famous for it’s Casino and Cascais an old fishing village, neither disappointed. Quinta da Marinha blends a brand new modern style clubhouse opened in April 2011, and a traditional starters hut which is located next to the 1st tee.

This is a Robert Trent Jones designed Golf course which was opened in 1984. Since then it has hosted professional events on the Ladies European Tour, Seniors Tour and Challenge Tour. The course is surrounded by beautiful scenery, with the Atlantic ocean and the Sintra mountains framing many of the holes.

We were greeted by PGA professional Gary Nairn who joined us to play the 1st hole which is a par 5 away from the clubhouse. Gary played a very inventive left-handed shot onto the green before we all putted out.

Oitavos Dunes

The Arthur Hills deigned course was opened in 2001 and since then has firmly established itself in the Worlds top 100 Golf courses. The dramatic piece of land offers magnificent views of the Sintra mountains, the Atlantic ocean and the westernmost point of Continental Europe, Cabo da Roca.

It was very nice to be met by Helder Ferreira and the President of the club Udo Kruse, who chose the 11th hole for us to play.

Udo, Ricardo and my son Scott made the four ball and the tee shot tested our driving ability with a stiff left to right wind blowing the ball towards the out of bounds.

The course is recognised by AUDUBON International, with nearly half of the property remaining undeveloped natural areas, whilst the stylish modern clubhouse offers it’s visitors tremendous views and a good experience.

Penha Longa

The journey to Penha Longa took us past the beautiful praia de Guincho, through the Malveira de Serra mountains and the Sintra national park.

The Penha Longa Resort is in a breathtakingly beautiful location and includes a nineteenth century palace, which was originally founded as a monastery as far back as the fourteenth century.

The Atlantic Golf course has been a Top 50 course in Europe for many years, mainly due to the superb Robert Trent Jones Junior’s clever use of the land. Changes in elevation is one of the key features of the course.

The Monastery Golf course offers nine holes which challenge the player and is true to the Robert Trent Jones spirit of opportunity and reward.

Day 1 Saturday March 8th

next day

It is only a few short weeks since the challenge was set and here we are on the verge of starting a project which will be very demanding on our bodies, but good for the soul and mind. Can't wait to hit the first shot.

The Pestana Sintra Golf Hotel is located just seven kilometres from the seaside resorts of Estoril and Cascais at Quinta da Beloura and is next to an 18 holes Golf course and close to the historical centre of Sintra.

Our room had a contemporary design and included a balcony with clear views of the Sintra hills. The accommodation was ideal after over four hours of cycling, covering 61 kilometres and playing six Golf courses. Although we did not have time to use either the indoor or outdoor pool or the spa which offers a sauna, hot tub and Turkish baths, we certainly intend to do so in the future. We did however enjoy dinner in the Mourisco Restaurant which serves traditional Portuguese cuisine and International dishes.
