#GRP2014

Welcome to the fund raising site for the European Disabled Golf Association

Pestana Beloura

We had stayed overnight in the Pestana Sintra Golf Hotel where the service was very good from all the staff that we met, making our stay very comfortable. Unfortunately we did not have time to use the spa facilities on this occasion, but perhaps in the future.

It was a pleasure to be joined today on the 18th tee at Pestana Beloura by Director of Golf Vitor Paixao, Golf professional Keith Barrett, and former Captain of the Portuguese national football team Carlos Xavier.

The Pestana Beloura Golf Course enjoys the backdrop of the Sintra mountains, which also serves as a source of wind to stiffen the courses challenge. Rocky Roquemore designed the course which I am told, has over 40,000 eucalyptus, oak, pine, magnolia, palm and other exotic trees.

Lisbon Sports Club

The ride to Lisbon Sports Club was a little more hilly than we had expected but the reception which we received from Maria Joao Moreira, her son Carlos and long serving Golf professional, Jose Baltazar was worth the effort. Jose has been at the club for over 40 years with at least 35 of them working as the Golf professional.

The Lisbon Sports Club, founded in 1922 has its origins in the Lisbon Cricket Club, which started in 1873. Several moves of the club took place and it’s first Golf course opened in 1932 with a six holes layout. Not until 1964 did the club settle in its current location, first opening nine holes then later five more holes were added. The Lisbon Sports Club for many years had 14 holes until 1992 when the last four holes were finally opened.

Belas Clube de Campo

It was only a short hop to Belas Clube de Campo. We found a short cut through the Golf course which allowed us to see the clubhouse from the top end of the double sided driving range.

This Rocky Roquemore Golf course runs through deep valleys with fairways and greens located in areas which offer challenge and enjoyment in equal portions. The course, one of the Andre Jordan group of properties, was opened in 1998 and has hosted both Challenge and Senior Tour events.

I played the 5th hole which is a 200 metres par 3. This tee is the highest point on the Golf course and offers a fine view of the Sintra mountains.

Paço de Lumiar

We arrived at the Paço de Lumiar Golf Course to a very warm reception. This very friendly club which is located in the city of Lisbon, boasts a two level driving range, short game area and a nine holes course which comprises seven par 3 holes and two par 4 holes.

I was joined by Alexandre, Alfonso, Manuel and Jose as we played the 9th hole. It is often said that good things come in small packages, this Gary Grandstaff course is situated between good access roads and garden areas. The club has one of Portugal’s top five largest memberships.

Specially made Onilda’s biscuits were being sold at the course and it was great to receive their donation from Carlota who had spent most of the day selling on behalf of the Golf & Ride Portugal 2014 project.

Day 2 Sunday March 9th

previous day      next day

Well rested and looking forward to meeting friends at several of the courses we visit today. Could be quite demanding as it is said that Lisbon is built on seven hills and we are planned to go through, around or over six of them.

Casa de Campo (copied from their website)

At the municipality of Sobral de Monte Agraço there is a valley which gives shelter to the River Sizandro, and side by side with the train line from the West, both are permanently looking after the village of Gozundeira who repays to the Mother Nature the protection from the bad weather maintaining the perfectly balanced landscape required.

It was here that, overwhelmingly blessed by the sight of green hills, was built in 1887 the whole rural construction that became a privileged space for accommodation, after a careful rehabilitation. Just 30 km away from Lisbon if offers everything expected at countryside from local gastronomy to green landscapes that few would expect so close to the capital city.
