#GRP2014

Welcome to the fund raising site for the European Disabled Golf Association

Santo Estévāo Golfe

Set in the untouched countryside of Vila Nova de Santo Estévāo, this Donald Steel course is in harmony with the Ribatejo region of Portugal.

It was good to be joined by Director of Golf, Jose Maria Casal Ribeiro who had been a regular member of the Portuguese team when I was the national coach. The 10th hole at Santo Estevao is a mere 307 metres with the false green front, getting the ball all the way back to the flag is something of a challenge.

Cork trees feature throughout the course and there are some very strong par 3 holes to negotiate.

Ribagolfe I & Ribagolfe II

Just a short ride of 15 kilometres and we entered the extensive grounds of Ribagolfe, to be welcomed by the Director of Golf, Jose Maria Casal Ribeiro who had been a regular member of the Portuguese team when I was the national coach. He chose the 18th hole at Ribagolfe I, which is an excellent finishing hole on this Peter Townsend deigned Golf course. I know that many players have walked up this hole needing a four to take a place in one of the several European Tour qualifying rounds.

Just a few hundred metres away is Ribagolfe II, which sits in a natural cork tree environment. The 10th hole is a strong par 4, which tests both the drive and the second shot to a raised green. MIchael King and European Golf Design have created a very enjoyable Golf course which can trick the player into thinking that the course offers no danger, which is far from the truth.

Aldeia dos Capuchos

Our journey to the Meliã Aldeia dos Capuchos hotel took us past the Christ the King statue which looks over Lisbon and the April 25th bridge. The hotel is situated on the south side of the river Tagus just a few minutes away from the coastal town of Costa da Caparica.

We arrived late in the afternoon and the Director of Golf Antonio Carvalho joined me to play the 2nd hole. We were rewarded with some magnificent views over the Atlantic ocean as the sunset.

The course designed by Portuguese Golf course architect Jorge Santana da Silva was opened in 2008, with seven par 3 holes and two par 4 holes. The course is literally a few steps from the hotel and offers the opportunity to sharpen your short game, or to play a few holes in a relatively short period of time.  Changes in elevation add to the challenge of the course as does the wind which often blows in from the sea.

Day 5 Wednesday March 12th

previous day      next day

Woke to birds singing and sun rising, a fantastic experience. Can't wait to get on the tee this morning with three courses before 11.00am. Today we will go through places and villages that we have never been to in all our 18 years in Portugal.

The Melia Aldeia dos Capuchos Hotel is located in the historic village of Capuchos, just three kilometres from Costa da Caparica beach, 15 minutes from the centre of Lisbon and only 20 minutes from the airport. We were delighted to be offered use of their facilities to us at the end of the penultimate day during Round 1 of Golf & Ride Portugal 2014. The hotel has an expansive spa, indoor and outdoor pools and a gym.

Our modern room included a balcony overlooking the Golf course and sea, with superb views of the setting sun. The accommodation was ideal after over five hours of cycling, covering 85 kilometres and playing four Golf courses. We enjoyed dinner in the Terraco Al-Madan Restaurant which has panoramic views from the terrace.
