Vidago Palace Course

The McKenzie Ross Vidago Palace Course, has been one of Portugal’s best kept secrets, since its inauguration back in 1936. Set in Vidago, a small thermal spa town, the Vidago Palace course enjoys wonderful views across both the Vidago and Oura valleys. The original nine holes course was redesigned by Cameron and Powell in 2010 as part of the complete restoration of the property.

Director of Golfe Alexandre Barroso and I played the demanding ninth hole over water to an undulating green. Alexandre has been a good player for many years and even though he now focuses his time on managing his team at Vidago Palace he has lost none of his touch.

Clube de Golfe Vidago

A short five kilometres ride from the centre of Vidago is the Clube de Golfe Vidago, which was formed some eight years ago. The course was built by the members, for the members, but is open to all those who wish to play. It is truly a club where everyone is involved and everyone is welcome.

Originally the course was opened with just six holes, but a further three holes were added a couple of years ago and now players can enjoy a course with nine holes, many of which are played from different tees to make 18 different tests. The main feature here is the small greens and spectacular views which can be seen all around.

We were greeted by Club professional Sebastiao Aguiar, Director Bruno Almeida and Club President, Pedro Jorge Salvador Roxo. The story of how the club, which started life at the neighbour course Vidago Palace, is fascinating and is testimony to how when an idea is formed and is backed up with committed action, then it can be brought into realisation.

Sebastiao, Bruno and I played the par three ninth hole over a lake, which not only requires correct club selection but also a steady hand on the small but tricky green which turns towards the water.

What a fantastic place to start the second round of Golf & Ride Portugal 2014. As with every round of Golf, before you go to the 1st tee there is the mix between excitement and apprehension. Hoping that our preparation has been sufficient to take on the upcoming challenge.

Vidago is a town in the municipality of Chaves, located 12 kilometres south of Chaves in the district of Vila Real. It is famous for its mineral waters and the Vidago Palace Hotel, once a favourite of the last Portuguese kings. The setting is pleasant among large trees and many families seek out its shady gardens for picnics.

Vidago is perhaps most famous for the therapeutic effects of the mineral waters and with the Vidago Palace Hotel set in its own park, this is an ideal place to relax and in our case prepare for the upcoming challenge.

The Vidago Palace Hotel was originally constructed in 1910 for King Manuell II as a summer retreat. Some 100 years and €50million of investment later, they have returned the property to its former glory and it is a superb example of sympathetic restoration. The restoration brought together craftsmen from all disciplines and it is clear to see that the work around the incredible staircase which can be found in the entry has been superbly carried out. We took a look around the very stylish spa, which we didn’t have time to enjoy, and found a modern design housing everything that one would expect from a five star facility.

We felt very privileged to be offered bed, breakfast and evening meal in this fabulous hotel.
