#GRP2014

Welcome to the fund raising site for the European Disabled Golf Association

Aroeira I & Aroeira II

The two Golf courses at Aroeira are cut through a preserved area of dense pine forrest. We were met by Director of Golf Carlos Fonseca and the CN Sports team, who were making a feature for their programme on Sport TV.

The Frank Pennick designed Aroeira I course has hosted the Portuguese Open on several occasions.

We made our way from Aroeira I to Aroeira II, through the sandy areas, which typifies the ground here, with the entrance gate a mere 600 metres or so away from the beach.

Aroeira II is a similar if different test with more water to negotiate and a more modern feel to the course. I played the 10th hole which not only tests ones driving accuracy with a narrow fairway, but also distance control with the second shot to a green with a false front.

Quinta do Peru

I always feel very comfortable at Quinta do Peru, as some 18 years ago this was practically my home course. The course, which is located close to Azeitão and is overlooked by the Serra da Arrábida, was designed by Rocky Roquemore, opening in 1994.

It was a pleasure to be joined by professional Pedro Figuereido who is now making his way on the tours of European Golf. Pedro a former British Boys Champion, was a part of the junior programme which we had set-up at Quinta do Peru back in the late 90s and his performance saw him make his way through to the national team and latterly he represented Europe.

The course which at first looks pretty, is in fact something of a test, which is due to being protected by greens which include changes of elevation and are well guarded by good placement of bunkers.

Troia

A short ferry crossing from Setubal preceded our arrival on the peninsula of Troia. As we left the ferry we were met by the shores of the Sado estuary, which serves merely as a warm-up to the beaches of the Atlantic ocean.

Often considered to be Portugal’s best kept Golfing secret, the Troia championship course is a magnificent example of Golf course architecture on what is admittedly a wonderful piece of land. Robert Trent Jones crafted the course with raised greens, some imaginative shaping and his trademark bunkering.

I was greeted by Director of Golf Antonio Castelo, who it has been my pleasure to know since he was a young and talented player. Together we played the par 3, 4th hole which not only borders the Atlantic ocean, but also offers views over the Serra da Arrábida.

Day 6 Thursday March 13th

previous day      next day

The first injury of GRP2014 and it was Tony who gave way, with a strain in the left quad. Cycling yesterday afternoon was difficult but ice packs and strapping certainly helped. We are to close to the finish, a question of mind over matter now.
